First Dental Visit: When Should Your Child See the Dentist?

Thursday 28th, December, 2023

As parents, we often have a long list of firsts to look forward to with our children: their first word, first step and first day of school. But there’s one first that often gets overlooked – the first visit to the dentist. Understanding when and why to schedule this important milestone can prepare your child for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

The Right Time for the First Dental Visit

The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that a child should go to the dentist within six months after their first tooth appears but no later than their first birthday. This might seem surprisingly early for many parents, but early visits are crucial for several reasons.

Why So Early?

  1. Preventive Care: Early visits help identify and prevent potential oral health issues. Cavities can occur in baby teeth; early detection is key to prevention and treatment.
  2. Habit Formation: Introducing your child to dental visits at a young age helps form positive habits and attitudes towards oral hygiene and dental care.
  3. Education for Parents: These early visits are as much for parents as for kids. Dentists can provide valuable advice on how to care for your child’s teeth, including tips on brushing, flossing, and diet.

What Happens During the First Visit?

The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. It’s an opportunity for your child to meet the dentist in a non-threatening and friendly way. The dentist may ask you to sit in the dental chair and hold your child during the examination. They will check all of your child’s existing teeth for decay, examine their bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues.

Preparing Your Child for the First Visit

  1. Talk Positively: Use positive language when talking about the dentist. Avoid using words like “pain” or “hurt.”
  2. Read Books or Watch Videos: There are many child-friendly books and shows about going to the dentist. These can help familiarise your child with what to expect.
  3. Play Pretend: Before the visit, play dentist with your child. Count each other’s teeth and practice sitting in a chair and opening your mouth.
  4. Schedule Wisely: Try to schedule the appointment at a time when your child is usually well-rested and cooperative.

Conclusion

Remember, the goal of the first dental visit is to make your child feel comfortable with the dentist and to establish a dental home. If the first experience is positive, your child is more likely to build a healthy relationship with dental care for years to come. So don’t wait – make that appointment as soon as those first tiny teeth make an appearance. Your child’s smile will thank you!

At Tunbridge Wells Dental Centre, we know how important it is to get your child to see the dentist early which is why we offer free child examinations up to the age of 16.
